The USC School of Medicine; Columbia, S.C.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Students are exposed to all facets of prenatal diagnosis including CVS, amniocentesis, high-resolution ultrasound, first trimester screening and multiple marker screening. Students have the opportunity to work with patients and their families referred for general genetic concerns and cancer genetic counseling.  Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards and the Antepartum Project Board enhance the learning experience.

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics and Child Development
This Center provides comprehensive pediatric and adult genetic services, including diagnostic evaluations, test coordination, genetic
 counseling, long term follow-up. Students may participate in pediatric/adult genetic clinics that routinely incorporate patients with chromosomal, single gene, metabolic, or cancer-related concerns. Students provide genetic counseling to parents of and patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in adult/pediatric CF specialty clinics.

Prenatal Wellness Center

This rotation offers a variety of prenatal and preconception genetic counseling opportunities and observation of prenatal tests, including CVS, early and traditional amniocentesis, and high-resolution ultrasound.  The monthly Fetal Board allows for the participation in a multidisciplinary discussion and planning of management of pregnancies with fetal abnormalities.

The Greenwood Genetic Center; Greenwood, S.C.
This center provides prenatal, pediatric, adult, and cancer genetic counseling services. Individuals are referred for a variety of general genetic conditions, and GGC places an emphasis on developmental disorders,autism and birth defects.  Some cancer services are provided in other cities, including Greenville, Anderson, and Spartanburg.  Laboratory activities include cytogenetic, molecular, and metabolic diagnostics and research. There are opportunities to observe fetal autopsies,  participate in monthly Case Review, and observe patient enrollment in NIH Natural History Studies for Rett syndrome and Angelman syndrome.  

The Greenwood Genetic Center; Columbia, S.C.
This rotation provides opportunity to participate in neonatal, child and adult evaluations, extensive outreach satellite clinics and specialty clinics such as craniofacial clinic and metabolic clinic.

The Greenwood Genetic Center:  Prenatal Genetic Counseling Clinic; Greenville, S.C.
This center is associated with Greenville Hospital System Center for Women's Medicine. Students counsel in a wide variety of prenatal indications. The monthly Fetal Board Conference allows for experience in the coordination and management of complex abnormal prenatal diagnoses.

Pediatric Rotation - The GGC Greenville pediatric rotation provides the opportunity to see children and adults with a variety of genetic conditions.  Specialty clinics, such as craniofacial and neurodevelopmental genetics, offer exposure to clinics in a team setting.

William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute; Columbia, S.C.
The institute is one of few centers in the United States providing evaluation, testing, and genetic counseling for child and adult psychiatric disorders and genetic disorders with psychiatric sequelae. Clinics include the Infant Psychiatry Assessment Clinic, and the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Clinic. It also serves as South Carolina's Huntington Disease Test and Clinical Services Center.

The Medical College of Georgia; Department of Pediatrics; Augusta, GA
This rotation provides experience with inpatient and outpatient comprehensive genetic evaluations, and offers opportunities for student participation in interdisciplinary specialty teams, such as the craniofacial clinic, hemophilia clinic, and telemedicine clinic.

The Carolinas Medical Center; Charlotte, N.C.
TThis regional referral center offers a full range of genetic services including comprehensive genetic evaluations, genetic counseling,
prenatal diagnosis, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics. This rotation focuses on prenatal, pediatric and cancer aspects of genetic
counseling. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of specialty clinics, including a unique Down syndrome clinic.

Fullerton Genetic Center; Asheville, N.C.
Students have the opportunity to participate in the only multidisciplinary Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders clinic in the state,
the NC Pregnancy Riskline (teratogen exposure concerns), and follow-up of patients being treated for lysosomal storage diseases.


Savannah Perinatology; Savannah, GA
This center is responsible for maternal/fetal medicine and preconceptional and prenatal genetic counseling in southeast Georgia and southern coastal South Carolina.  Genetic services and high risk pregnancy management are provided in cooperation with Memorial Health University Medical Center's Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Neonatology. This center offers a unique training opportunity due to the high volume of patients, as well as the diversity of the patient population.

Duke University Medical Center; Durham, N.C.
Fetal Diagnostic Center
Genetic counseling students in the Duke Fetal Diagnostic Center will be exposed to a wide variety of prenatal counseling opportunities.  This experience will include preconception as well as prenatal counseling for advanced maternal age, abnormal maternal serum screening, teratogen exposures, ultrasound anomalies, carrier screening due to various ethnic backgrounds, and family history of genetic conditions.  Other educational opportunities are available through interdisciplinary meetings to discuss the management of pregnancies and deliveries of babies with prenatally identified conditions, radiology conference to discuss abnormal ultrasound findings, and genetics case conference.

Medical Genetics Program

In this setting, genetic counseling students will observe and interact with children, adults and families with established genetic diagnoses. Students will also be involved with consultations regarding possible genetic diagnoses for both in patients and out patients. Students will attend a general genetics clinic and clinics devoted to specific conditions. Weekly clinics include Cardiovascular genetics clinic, Fragile X syndrome clinic and Metabolic Disease clinic. Monthly specialty clinics include Down Syndrome Clinic, Neurofibromatosis Clinic, and Connective Tissue Clinic. There are several weekly meetings in this setting that students

The Hereditary Cancer Clinic at Duke University Medical Center allows genetic counseling students the exposure to both clinical patient care and research. Students will talk with families before genetic counseling appointments to obtain family and medical history. Students will learn how to use statistical models for risk assessment and will learn to identify appropriate literature and resources for families. Students may have the opportunity to discuss diagnoses, natural history of cancer and pros and cons of testing options. Thorough documentation will be expected in the form of consultation notes and patient and physician letters. Students will have the opportunity to attend cancer case conferences and may be asked to present a case during the rotation.

The University of North Carolina; Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Department of OB/GYN
This center is staffed by five certified genetic counselors and offers students a variety of experiences in prenatal genetic counseling. Cases include increased maternal age patients, positive serum screening patients, ultrasound abnormalities, teratogen exposures and patients with a broad range of family history concerns. Students will have contact with a diverse patient population and gain experience working with Spanish interpreters. Students will see patients both at the UNC prenatal diagnostic clinic and at our satellite clinic at the Rex Birth Center in Raleigh, NC.

Other opportunities for students include participating in weekly meetings and following patients through the Center for Maternal and Infant Health working with the maternal serum screening laboratory, and developing educational material for patients.

The Genetics and Metabolism Clinic

This site offers students the opportunity to participate in the weekly Pediatric Genetics and Metabolism Clinic. In addition, students participate in specialty clinics such as Neurofibromatosis clinic and Craniofacial clinic and are active participants in the consultation service.

Emory University; Atlanta, GA
The Department of Human Genetics at Emory University has a vibrant clinical program organized under the Division of Medical Genetics.  With numerous clinical geneticists, world-renown genetic researchers and laboratory specialists, and nearly 20 genetic counselors, Emory Genetics provides a rich educational opportunity where students can receive training in general pediatrics, metabolic disorders, cancer, and prenatal genetic counseling.
